Pearl: June Stone of the Month

Posted by on 6/22/2016 to Gemstone Spotlight
One of June's three birthstones, pearls are unique in that they are the only gem to come from a living sea creature. Pearls require no faceting or polishing to reveal their beauty, unlike most stones. They can be round, smooth or a variety of other irregular shapes, and are valued for their iridescence.

Pearls are created from the formation layers of calcium carbonate inside a live shelled mollusk. Most pearls sold are cultured pearls, from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels. However, the most prized pearls are found in the wild. Pearls can be found in a variety of colors including white, pink, silver, green, blue, black and purple.

These lovely gems have been used for centuries as jewelry and clothing adornments, with evidence of the use dating back to the Romans. They were highly prized in many cultures for their value and rarity. Ancient Chinese civilizations believed the pearl protected them from fire and dragons. It was believed in other cultures to symbolize wealth and modesty. In more recent history, stars like Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe prized their pearl jewelry. Perhaps the most famous pearl necklace, La Peregrina was a wedding gift from Spain's Prince Phillip II in the 16th century and later belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. Recently, pearls have been used to encrust clutches, trim wedding dresses or as simple and elegant jewelry.
